Abstract
The Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised(WMS-R) is an extensive test battery which appraises major dimensions of memory functions. As a preliminary study for the standardization of the WMS-R was tested the validity of the WMS-R focusing on the WMS-R
indices.
The subjects consisted of temporal lobe epileptic(TLE) patients (11 with a left hemisphere focus, 10 with a right hemisphere focus) and age/education/IQ scores-matched 10 normal controls, who underwent the WMS-R and the Korean Wechsler
Intelligence
Scale(KWIS). In order to compare the three groups on the five WMS-R indices and IQ-WMS-R scores, these scores were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis test. The validity of the WMS-R was confirmed by differentiating TLE patient groups
from
normals on the WMS-R indices. Comparisons between patient groups with left and right seizure foci revealed no significant difference on the WMS-R indices. Full Scale IQ-WMS-R indices as an indicator of memory impairment differentiated the
temporal
lobe
epileptic patients from normal subjects. Moreover, differential performance between patient groups with left and right seizure foci was found on IQ-WMS-R indices. These results show the usefulness of IQ-WMS-R indices as well as WMS-R indices in
clinical
setting. Further research is required for the standardization and application of the WMS-R in a variety of clinical settings.
